Trunk or Treat

Trunk or Treat

By Emma Adams, Communications Student Intern

The Southwood Trunk-or-Treat has developed into a highly anticipated annual event after being established in 2022. Hundreds of children and their families attend the event, where they are treated to candy, games, and a fun atmosphere which unites the community. The Trunk-or-Treat is an exciting activity for families and friends of all ages, with trunks being hosted by many groups and organizations from the surrounding community including the police and fire departments, parents, Southwood staff, PTO groups, and Southwood High School students representing many clubs and teams.

High school students in particular are encouraged to decorate a trunk with a group of their friends or as a part of a club and pass out candy to their fellow classmates, underclassmen, and elementary students. In doing so, high school students are able to not only provide a fun experience for their community members, but also demonstrate service to underclassmen and set an example of community involvement. High school students are able to bring joy to many kids and set a precedent for them to do the same when they eventually become high school students themselves.

"I really enjoyed being a part of the trunk or treat again this year. It's great to see the elementary kids having fun dressing up and being with their families. I'm thankful I was able to help be a part of the amazing group of people who made that night possible." - Randy Boone

In addition to being a fun activity for children, Trunk-or-Treat is also enjoyable for parents and high school students not participating in hosting a trunk. Spending time with others and seeing the creative ways in which members of the community dress up and decorate trunks make the experience one to look forward to for people of all ages.

As for organizing the event itself, putting together a trunk is also immensely fun as it is an opportunity for friends and team members to band together and exercise their creativity by organizing costumes and a trunk. Students who are artistically inclined are given an outlet to express their creativity and create an elaborate trunk to show off their talents.

"We worked together to organize everything and shared our progress on costumes and decorations with one another as we worked on them and we chose music to play!" - Malia Mahan

Additionally, Trunk-or-Treat can be an opportunity for clubs to advertise what they have to offer and why younger students should be excited about joining them when they are in high school.

It was so beautiful to be able to see the little ones get so excited for our musical! It was like their favorite childhood friends had come to life. Ariel, Sebastian, Scuttle, and Flounder were quick to give smiles and hugs. They were all so excited to see the show that next weekend!” - Ainsley Chellis (Ursula)

"It was so exciting seeing all the kids being happy to see the characters from The Little Mermaid. Some kids walked around and pointed out every character that was dressed up for the trunk or treat. Some kids even dressed up as characters from the musical and seemed very excited to hear about our upcoming musical." - Meryn Norman (Scuttle)

All in all, Trunk-or-Treat is an event not to be missed. Whether one attends for the candy, to look at the costumes and trunks, or to host a trunk, it is an exciting activity fit for the whole community.
